At Highland Advanced Dental Care, we are one of the few dental practices to offer an incision-free alternative to a gum graft called the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. It takes less time than a grafting procedure and you’ll recover more quickly too. Still, there are several ways to prevent receding gums from occurring in the first place.

  1. Brush and floss every day, but use a gentle touch. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily too. But don’t brush too hard, as it can damage enamel and damage your gums. If you tend to brush aggressively, consider getting an electric toothbrush that can “train” you to use more gentle pressure.
  2. Visit the dentist twice a year for cleanings. Come to our Highland, MI office every six months for a cleaning and exam. We’ll remove the bacteria from your teeth that can cause gum disease. If we find any signs of disease, we’ll prevent it from progressing with a deep-cleaning treatment.
  3. Correct a misaligned bite. Misaligned teeth put pressure on your teeth and gums. This can cause many dental problems, including gum recession. If your bite is misaligned, we can likely correct it with ClearCorrect treatment.
  4. Wear a nightguard. Many people grind their teeth and/or clench their jaw in their sleep. These habits put a lot of force on teeth and gums that can result in damage, including receding gums. Wearing a custom-made nightguard will protect your teeth and gums.
