Fillings, Crowns, & More To Restore Your Teeth
Teeth are made to last a lifetime, but as you no doubt already know, things can happen. Accidents can chip or crack your teeth, injuries can knock out a tooth, or the harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay can get past your best efforts and cause cavities or infections. All that brushing and flossing won’t restore your teeth back to their healthy state, which is why Dr. James LoCascio offer a wide range of restorative dentistry Highland Township, MI dental office of Highland Advanced Dental Care.
Cavities are one of the most common dental problems you can suffer, and while they might not sound serious, they can be if left untreated. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria, and those won’t just stop ruining your enamel one day. To combat decay, Dr. James LoCascio will carefully remove the damaged enamel and fill in that space with a special tooth-colored composite. (We never use silver or metal amalgam tooth fillings here.)
Inlays & Onlays
As a more-modern alternative to tooth fillings, inlays and onlays can seal up areas of tooth decay. They are made from a very strong material colored to look like your natural teeth, so they provide excellent protection while being incredibly hard to notice. Inlays are placed on the biting surface of a tooth (it lays in between the cusps), whereas onlays can cover the top and sides of the tooth.
Bacteria don’t just rest on the surface of your teeth. If a cavity gets really bad, the bacteria can infect the pulp inside the tooth, causing a really bad toothache that will not go away on its own. In fact, you could lose the entire tooth if something isn’t done. We can provide root canal therapy to help. First, Dr. James LoCascio will make a small hole in the tooth. He uses that hole to remove all of the infected pulp, replacing it with a special inert material to keep the tooth strong. Then, we can protect the tooth with a dental crown.
If your teeth are chipped or even cracked, dental veneers can do wonders. These porcelain covers are made very thin but very durable. They are shaped to fit your smile and then are placed over the damaged front of your teeth. Dental veneers very quickly protect damaged areas and make your teeth look great again.
Sometimes, the damage caused by tooth decay or an injury is too big for tooth fillings or dental veneers. Trying to cram that much composite material into a cavity could fracture the tooth. Instead, we can use dental crowns. These are tough but natural-looking caps that fit over a damaged tooth. They are custom-made for your teeth, and because they fit over the whole visible part of your tooth, dental crowns can restore both the beauty and function back to that damaged tooth.
Dental Bridges & Dental Implants
Of course, it’s hard to repair damage to a tooth that’s not there anymore. Restoring your smile means making sure you have all of your teeth, as living with a gap in your smile is unhealthy and unattractive. Dental bridges use replacement teeth held in place by a pair of dental crowns attached to the teeth on either side of that gap, sort of building a bridge across the space. Dental implants use a surgically implanted titanium root to hold a replacement teeth. While dental implants are more invasive than a dental bridges, they tend to last much longer because they are rooted to your jawbone like real teeth.
