  • What is gum disease treatment?

    A thorough cleaning can reverse the effects of early-stage gum disease. Beyond that, we use a two-part treatment called scaling and root planing. We remove bacteria from pockets between your teeth and gums, then smooth your tooth roots so it’s harder for bacteria to collect there. In addition, we may provide you with trays to fill with a medicinal gel and wear for a few minutes each day.

  • Is gum disease treatment painful?

    As with any procedure in our office, we always use a gentle touch when performing gum disease treatment. We’ll use local anesthesia, administered with our sting-free DentalVibe system, and you can also receive laughing gas if you’d like. It will help you remain relaxed throughout your procedure. If disease has caused your gums to recede, Dr. LoCascio can repair them with the Chao® Pinhole Surgical Technique, a more comfortable alternative to a gum graft.

  • What are gum disease symptoms?

    If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or at other times, you may have gum disease. Other gum disease symptoms include chronic bad breath, gum tenderness and/or swelling, and gums that appear more red than pink. In later stages of gum disease, gums will recede away from your teeth, and your teeth may feel loose.

  • What causes gum disease?

    Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an infection caused by bacteria in your mouth. Bacteria form a clear, sticky film called plaque that builds up around your gumline, leading to inflamed and infected gums. If left untreated, the infection causes your gums to separate from teeth, creating “pockets” where more bacteria accumulate. In the advanced stages of gum disease, the infection spreads from your gums to the bone that supports your teeth. Your teeth will loosen and possibly fall out.
