  • Can TMJ problems go away without treatment?

    TMJ disorders are often linked to stress and stress-related behaviors such as jaw clenching and/or teeth grinding. If your stress goes away, it’s possible TMJ pain will lessen on its own. However, many people don’t even know they clinch or grind because these behaviors often happen during sleep. Wearing a custom mouthguard will stop these behaviors and relieve pressure on your jaw.

  • Does TMJ treatment work?

    A custom-made mouthguard works by stopping behaviors like teeth grinding that contribute to TMJ pain and also by relieving pressure on your jaw to give it an opportunity to heal. We can also suggest some lifestyle changes that will lessen your TMJ pain. Many of our patients have benefited from doing muscle relaxation exercises, avoiding certain hard foods, and taking anti-inflammatories.

  • Will insurance pay for TMJ treatment?

    If TMJ treatment is determined to be medically necessary, some medical insurance plans may help pay for it. Some dental insurance plans also may cover it. However, not all insurance plans cover TMJ treatment. We’re happy to help you determine your benefits before treatment. You have payment options other than insurance, including CareCredit financing.

  • Can mouthguards help with TMJ problems?

    Yes, mouthguards from an experienced dentist are designed to fit over your upper and lower teeth so that as you sleep, your jaw stays in a forward position to properly realign the joint, as well as prevent you from clenching down and putting excess pressure on your TMJ during the night.
